It’s probably a big reason why you have a surprising number of Dark Souls vets who struggle at this game, particularly those who never relied heavily on that game’s parrying mechanic. Yes, there are other nuances to the game that I’ll be getting to but that’s really the gist of it. Heck, if you want me to give you the Cliff’s Notes version of this review, it pretty much boils down to: get it if you like to parry, skip it if you don’t. In Sekiro, however, parrying is important, nay, completely necessary in order to make decent progress in the game. Unless you can pull it off 100%, it’s usually better to go for the safer option. It’s the reason why a lot of players prefer to dodge or even block over parrying. Fail spectacularly, though, and you’ll end up eating historically accurate giant-enemy-crab damage.

Pull it off and you’re in great shape to counter a dangerous foe. See, whether it be Dark Souls or even Street Fighter III, parrying is a move that entails risk.

No siree, Sekiro is mostly about parrying, a game mechanic seen in other games that many players admittedly either absolutely love or absolutely hate. That’s great for Sekiro as you really don’t want to be constantly using its less generous invincibility frames to evade. Since I can no longer remember the mechanics for Dark Souls despite pouring a ton of time into that series, I didn’t have any old habits to break or unlearn - like instinctively evading almost everything, for example. That gaming amnesia, however, helped immensely in allowing me to quickly get acclimated to Sekiro’s combat. Normally, it’s something that annoys me, especially when I try to go back to a game with plenty of control nuances like God Eater 3. Basically, I’ve pretty much developed a habit of wiping out whatever hard drive I have in my brain for game controls as I move on to the next thing. I am so, so, so, so sorry guys.Īnyway, that’s what happens to me as a result of playing an inordinate amount of games for work.

And flew into cliffs or double jumped like an idiot as I tried to remember how to make my Storm Javelin hover for that aerial shield boost. As I randomly threw out special attacks with no enemies present. Just ask the poor Anthem randoms I recently played with after I spent a good part of my first mission back in a while. With the exception of games like Monster Hunter or Street Fighter and King of Fighters, I tend to quickly forget button layouts and controls for a lot of the games I play once I take a break from them for a couple of weeks.

In fact, this is one of those games where my tendency to have gaming amnesia really helped out. But you definitely don’t want to play Sekiro like Dark Souls or even Bloodborne, for that matter. This is especially true if you happen to be a player with a lot of Dark Souls experience. 1 for any player who decides to jump headfirst into the game’s sweet and deadly embrace. Right then, on with the games.“Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice” is not Dark Souls. Well, there's Slashy Souls, but to be honest the less said about that the better. It's the sort of game where you die a lot, and it can be pretty intimidating trying to get on board with the systems it throws at you.īut you can't play it on your iPhone. If you've not heard of it, it's a super tough action RPG that punished your every mistake with swift retribution. There's no escaping the fact that everyone loves Dark Souls.
